From Traditional Courses to Micro-Lessons
The world of learning and education has long been cemented in traditional methods. Predominantly, we have relied on extensive courses, expecting them to be the beacon of knowledge. But let's shake things up a bit: Courses are dead. Do this instead! This disruptive thought is not a figment of my imagination, but a groundbreaking insight from a live audio event hosted by my mentor and friend, Gary L Henderson. It was a pivotal conversation that signified a paradigm shift in the approach to learning and teaching.
The concept at the event introduces us to a massive shift in learning: stepping away from the long, often monotonous, traditional courses and leaning towards a more engaging, time-effective, and interactive way of learning. The suggested pivot is towards micro-lessons, the bite-sized nuggets of information that are easy to consume, understand, and apply.
Let's paint a picture: You're on your lunch break, and instead of mindlessly scrolling on your phone, you're learning a new skill or understanding a novel concept. Isn't that image far more enticing than drudging through hours of lecture videos or text-based content?
My Personal Journey and Experience
You're probably wondering why I am advocating this shift. Well, as most of you know, I'm not here to preach or impose ideas. I'm here to share my journey, including the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
On my journey of growth and improvement, Gary has been instrumental. He's been coaching me to enhance my public speaking skills, not through a traditional, expansive course, but by way of concise, timely, and potent tips. His advice? Speak in sound bites, focus on 30 seconds, or 60 to 90 seconds depending on the situation. This approach of using micro-lessons and bite-sized learning has proven more potent than any comprehensive resources on public speaking that I've come across.
Having a mentor like Gary to pinpoint my blind spots has been enlightening and transformative. It has helped me grow in my abilities, in my confidence, and in my role as a communicator.
