Join our quilt conversation

As part of the exhibition we want to hang a series of mini quilts made by you. Anyone can enter, from anywhere in the world and while only 20–30 quilts will be chosen to hang in the bricks and mortar gallery, all quilts will be featured in a special online gallery.

Entries to our mini quilt challenge are open now and close at midnight 2 April 2023 in your time zone.

Quilts can be entered by either selecting the ‘Mini quilt entry’ featured extra or by joining the ‘Artist supporter’ membership which includes the mini quilt entry fee. Successful artist supporters will also receive a dedicated social media post.

The nitty gritty

Your mini quilt should:

  • be an original design pieced and quilted by you

  • measure 40cm x 40cm (16” x 16”)

  • consist of at least three layers (backing, batting and top) joined by stitching

  • have been made since January 2022

  • not have previously shown in a gallery or major quilt show/exhibition

  • have a bound or faced edge

Chosen mini quilts will need to arrive in Australia by 19 May 2023.

Quilts will likely be held for exhibition until the end of 2024.

Where will the quilts be shown

The show will first open at Gallery 76 in Concord, Sydney, where it will hang for the month of June. Further details, such as the opening event date, will be published closer to the time.

The second showing will be at Louis Joel Gallery in Altona, Melbourne, where it will hang for two weeks from 19 to 31 August 2023.

Again, further details will be announced closer to the date.

Applications are currently being submitted for additional venues including in the US and the UK.
If you know a gallery who would welcome such a show, please get in touch.

Theme

Mini quilts should be made in response to the 'In Conversation' theme outlined in the introductory post.

Some prompts you could consider:

  • What quilting connections have you made online?

  • How has your quilting practice been influenced by online conversations?

  • What creativity has been made possible for you online that would not have been otherwise?

  • How has it made you feel being able to connect with people who share your passion?
