Star Wars Toy Photography - Dagobah Training Part 01

Apr 09, 2021

One of the first images from the Dagobah training scene in the Marvel comic that didn't make it into the movie was Luke Skywalker practising with his lightsaber.

Up until this point in the film Luke had used his lightsaber on the Wampa and to slice open the belly of the AT-AT during the battle of Hoth. Here we see Luke practising with the blade. Yoda (or maybe Luke himself) has thrown a metal bar into the air and it is "dancing" around as Luke attempts to "cleave it" into 7 pieces.

In order to get this shot for my project I will need to take advantage of the Luke Skywalker figure's extensive articulation. I will also need to add a "gleaming metal bar" to the shot.I'm pretty sure I have something I can use and I will suspend it using a piece of wire that I will remove in post.

Above is a test shot of the figure posed to reflect the image in the book. It's already clear that if I do this right the final effect should be awesome.

The big choice I need to make when I take the actual shot for the project is do I try to replicate the book and have a solid colour background, or do I use the Dagobah set and light it to resemble the shot from the book? I suspect a more complete image taken with a Dagobah set backdrop would be best, but let me know what you would prefer to see.

The next entry will in this series will look at the next (and somewhat problematic) panel in the book.

Luke's failure...
