Star Wars Toy Photography - Dagobah Training Part 02

"The bar would be in seven pieces... were you a Jedi."

Luke fails in his trial. Yoda has tasked Luke to slice the "gleaming metal bar" into seven pieces. The metal bar dances in the air before Luke, but he is simply not proficient enough with the blade to connect with it as he should. He collapses to his knees...

Luke's failure is a result of his running through the woods with Yoda in his blue back pack. In the book Luke has dropped to one knee and holds the lightsaber, which is still ignited, before him.

Due to the somewhat limited articulation, the above test image is the best I think I'm going to get here. The new single joint knees on this version of Luke limits what I can do to get the knee up to his elbow. I have posed the figure to its limit here, but the final shot will be taken from a lower angle in line with the book, which may make the figure look even more upright than it does here. I may need to experiment a bit with this one. I will also need to place Yoda somewhere else in my shot as this version shows a much smaller Yoda on Luke's shoulder.

What I do think will look great is the lightsaber. On a darkened set with the glowing blade added in post, this should look really effective. What I will attempt is multiple passes at the lighting. The first shot will light the figure and the set. The second will be an FX pass where I use the LumeCube's barn doors, a blue filter and probably a defuser to add a physical sliver of blue glow to Luke that will emulate the glow from the blade of the lightsaber. Historically I have added these lighting effects in software, but now I suspect I will be able to get the effect "in camera" and combine the passes in software using a layer mask.

The next shot will be one that requires an R2-D2, which I am still waiting for after having to return mine due to missing dome plates!

Forget your old measures...

Marc
