Hello, my name is Dionne. Welcome to my Buy Me a Coffee Pronunciation studio. This audio is brought to you by TEFL Training and Recruitment. For more information please visit www.dionneseslcyberlounge.com In this pronunciation audio, we are going to practice the /u:/ as in pool vowel sound and the /ʊ/ as in pull vowel sound. The /u:/ sound can be a challenge for non-native English speakers because many English learners over-use the /u:/ sound and use it where they should use the /ʊ/ sound. Pull will sound like pool if you use the wrong sound. To make the /u:/ vowel sound: The back part of my tongue is rounded up towards the roof of my mouth and the front part of my tongue is down with the tip of my tongue lightly touching the back part of my front bottom teeth. My jaw opens just a little. My lips are rounded, but it's very important to mention that first that my lips are more relaxed and then become a tight circle. I don't start my lips with a tight circle. /u:/ /u:/ My lips begin relaxed and then end off in a tight circle to make that sounds. Please repeat after me: Blue, food, group, too, shoe, fruit, juice, boot, choose, use To make the /ʊ/ sound: The back of my tongue lifts towards the roof of my mouth, but the tip of my tongue is pulled back behind my bottom front teeth. My lips are partially sticking out. My jaw opens enough to release the sound /ʊ/ /ʊ/. Please repeat after me: Book, sugar, stood, took, should, would, could, bull, push, put Let's practice these two sounds together. Fool - Full: The fool is very full. Luke - Look: Luke likes to look. Pool - Pull: Swim in the pool then pull. Shoed - Should: She shooed the fly like she should Kook - Cook: The kook cannot cook Suit - Soot: There is a suit in the soot.
