The Adam Project Review

The Adam Project Review

Mar 11, 2022

Part  Star Wars, part Star Trek, part Back to the Future, The Adam Project is all fun.

Last night I attended a special CineMark screening of the new Ryan Reynolds, Netflix film, The Adam Project. Expecting to have a good time, as one usually does with a Ryan Reynolds movie, The Adam Project does not disappoint. This movie is everything it promises, a throwback to the movies I grew up within the eighties.

The Adam Project even looks like the eighties. The fog-filled forests of E.T., amazing speeder bike-like chases from Return of the Jedi, and the heart and soul of films like Flight of the Navigator right up to the current Marvel features.

Opening the film, we meet Adam Reed a hotshot pilot escaping 2050 in his time traveling fighter jet. Injured and disoriented Adam sets the controls for the wrong time period and ends up in 2022 where he meets his 12-year-old self, a nerd and frequent target of schoolyard bullies. Realizing that the old Adam is actually himself, the pair set out to fix the timeline. However, old Adam has an ulterior motive. He was headed to 2018 where he believes his future wife was headed, played by the always amazing Zoe Saldana.

Rounding out the cast is the Adams’ mom, Jennifer Garner, and their dad, Mark Ruffalo.

I’m not going into spoilers so you can enjoy this story. I hate when reviews do that, I’ll just say pay attention. There are Easter eggs aplenty scattered throughout the entire film and one toward the end that is just too perfect.

I cannot wait until Friday to see this again on Netflix and study each scene for all the hat tip nods and winks to some of my favorite movies of all time. This is one I guarantee that will be enjoyed time after time.
