Microgreens: From South Africa to Minnesota

Apr 11, 2023

I am a late comer when it comes to micro greens.

We didn't grow them on our Grant County farm and, honestly, we hadn't heard of them. It's just been over the past few years as my sister and I have gone to farmers markets that we've really discovered the versatility of micro greens.

While I love micro greens (I am a spicy mix fan), I love even more the stories of the growers and my most recent interview with grower Matthys Kroon has been a thrill.

Matthys Kroon grew up in South Africa and, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, began growing vegetables with his wife, Roxanne for their young family.

Their production model included hydroponics and they raised micro greens.

When the family moved to the U.S. in 2021, they settled in Fergus Falls, MN. It was close to Roxanne's family in North Dakota and the community offered the amenities and small town feel they desired.

And they were able to grow micro greens once again, but this time moved the production to the family's basement.

Matthys sells year round at Dutchmen Organics in Fergus Falls, MN and to area restaurants plus he sells at the seasonal Fergus Falls (MN) Farmers Market.

Read more of his story and learn the versatility of micro greens at thelocalgrowers.com.

And, if you can, consider "buying me a coffee." The money raised is used to cover travel costs and blog upkeep.

Thank you for your time and welcome to The Local Growers!
