Awakening the sleeping giant - The CR-6 MAX

May 21, 2022

About a month ago I decided that I had outgrown my humble Cocoon ModelMaker 3D printer. The final straw was when I wanted to print something quite simple that was around 15cm long, placing it just a smidge outside the maximum 120x135x100mm build volume of my printer.

I had already been eyeballing the Creality CR-6 SE as it seemed to do everything I wanted and the reviews were largely positive. With a larger print volume of 235x235x250mm as well as auto-leveling (another big gripe with my Cocoon is manual bed leveling) and heated print bed, plus all the extra benefits like silent stepper motors, open source and community firmware and more, it seems like a win.

And then, I found the Creality CR-6 MAX. Holy moly. Basically the same printer as the SE, but BIGGER, with a print volume of 400x400x400mm, and only a few hundred dollars more.

I didn't really want to spend the extra money as I had a number of other things on my list that I wanted to get, but in the end I thought the larger build volume would be useful - and I didn't want to end up in the same position as before where I couldn't QUITE print that bigger thing!

It was around a day after I clicked the "Buy now" button on the larger CR-6 MAX when I realised that I had forgotten to check if I actually had bench space for it. I couldn't find any information online about the footprint it needs on the desk, but it didn't take a mathematician to work out my 600mm deep bench would be no match for this monster.

Fortunately I had a spare desk in another room that I was sure would be large enough (turned out, only just!) so tragedy averted.

Check out the album for some progress shots of the assembly and the completion of my traditional "Hello World" print.

For anyone looking for some guidance, you're going to want to give yourself pretty much 1m x 1m of space. Width-wise you could make do with a TAD less (absolutely no less than 90cm) but that wont give you much maneuvering space to load up the spool. In terms of depth, there is a little more flexibility - mine is hanging a tad off the desk so as long as you don't stand in the wrong spot while the print bed fully extends you can avoid copping a glass plate to the ol' chicken tenders.
