Getting organised is half the battle

Getting organised is half the battle

May 15, 2022

Its all good and well to have a whole lot of stuff, but unless you can actually find it (let alone remember what you've got) what's the point?

One of my biggest bugbears in our computer room for the last while has been the plastic drawers next to the door. Harking back to the early days of my marriage, they have long since become a dumping ground for random cables, connectors and god knows what else. A black hole of sorts that accumulates "stuff" without ever relinquishing control of it again.

What even is in those drawers? I couldn't remember. Two of them were so overfilled, I haven't been able to open them in months. Time to declutter!

Last weekend we went to Ikea on our way to see family and bought a few things, including a new set of drawers. I had a narrow 40cm space to work with but Ikea had the absolutely perfect set in its Alex range. Finally today I got to assemble them (with a whole lot of help from little fingers) and do some decluttering.

Here is the before and after shot of the old crummy plastic ones, and the new shiny timber ones.

The photo is from a low angle so it looks like the drawers are now covering the light switch but they actually only overlap the bottom centimetre of the switch plate so still easy to get to!

Beyond just reorganising the old drawers, I've now also finally got the space to unbox some key things that have been a pain to get access to. It brings me such joy to be able to open a draw and see this!

In the process of sorting everything - power cables, network cables, etc. - I also unearthed a ridiculous number of cables that have long since passed their usefulness. As well as an old Blu Ray player that was inexplicably sticky??

Do any of these bring back memories? Or if you are too young to remember them, wanna have a guess at what they were used for?

Enjoy this post?
