Some Facts about Turkish Language

Modern Turkish language (or Turkey Turkish) has more speakers and dialects than you think. Turkish is a significant language first because of the sheer numbers of people who speak it. Let's talk about some facts about Turkish language.

  • Turkish is spoken in many countries, Turkey and TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) is 2 most known ones. In these countries Turkish is the native and official language.

    Turkey is the main country where Turkish is spoken by the vast majority. Turkish is the official language of Turkey and the mother tongue of an increasing 85 million population.

    TRNC is a rather small country with its 888.000 population.

    Turkish as a Minority Language

    As descendants of the Ottoman Empire, Turkish is spoken by large number of minorities across Bulgaria, Greece, Iraq and Romania.

    Immigrant Turkish Speakers

    Along with the native lands, Turkish people also immigrated across the world. Most known of them, of course, is Germany. According to dandc.eu, today there is around 3 million native Turkish speakers live in Germany. According to Wikipedia, another 3 million Turkish speakers are settled in the U.S.A. .

Turkic Languages

Turkish belongs to a language family that includes thirty Turkic languages spoken in Eastern EuropeCentral Asia and Siberia. The differences among these languages are much smaller than their close similarities. Knowledge of Turkish opens up to you a region of great geo-political significance.

Some of the Turkic languages are;

  • Turkish

  • Azerbaijani

  • Turkmen

  • Crimean Tatar

Modern Turkish language is in Ural-Altaic language family, under Altaic branch.
