Balloon Release

Balloon Release

Apr 02, 2022

Balloon releases sound benign. I mean, you're celebrating something, right? Either celebrating a joyous occasion or celebrating the amazing life of a loved one who's passed away. But think about it - what happens to those balloons that float up into the sky? Do they really carry messages of care, or do they just soon become litter. Brightly colored trash blowing across the grass.

We've had to save a calf from this kind of litter as she picked up a string with her next bite of grass. It's common for land owners to lose an animal that chokes on a discarded balloon. How tragic! How can this be honoring a loved one?

There are better ways to honor someone. Plant a tree in their honor. Or a rosebush - you can smile remembering them fondly each time you see those beautiful blooms. And that remembrance lasts much longer than the fleeting moment of watching balloons float away to become a trashy problem somewhere else.

Once at the funeral of a dear friend, the family placed a basket containing packets of seeds at the table near the guest book. Each guest was invited to take a packet of seeds and plant them in memory of our dear one. What a lovely idea!

If you really want the visual appeal of something floating upward you can blow bubbles like they do at many weddings these days. There are many options to celebrate or remember someone.

Next time someone considers a balloon release, perhaps you can suggest one of these options instead.
