Answering your questions. Before and dur ...

Answering your questions. Before and during the war

Mar 22, 2023

Hi!

I planned this letter for tomorrow. But I'm in such a writing mood now, so I want to talk with you. These days were hard for me and Ukraine. Hate, war, damages, and deaths are in our windows.

So today, I will answer the questions about my life before and during the war. I'm sorry that I won't be able to answer everything.

But at first, the picture. I found it on my phone. It's from August 23, 2021. My sweet before time. Question: My question is about your travels before the war. Where have you visited, both within Ukraine and in other countries? What things particularly struck on your travels?

Me: Mainly, I traveled on business. I visited the US, UK, France, Switzerland, Greece, UAE, and probably some other countries. As for Ukraine, of course, I've been to some parts of my country and the main cities (but not so many, unfortunately). I was in Donetsk when it was free, I used to have summer vacations in Crimea when Vlad (Son) was small, and Crimea was free too. My neighbors in my hometown always had their relatives from Mariupol in the summer, but I never had a chance to visit their city... What struck me on my travels? People. Always people.

Question: Where you met your friends & what you enjoyed doing together before the war & how that has changed?

Me: I don't have many friends. And didn't. Why? I don't know. I am absolutely fine with being alone. It's strange as I like to watch people, their moods, and characters. Maybe (only maybe) I'm looking for heroes for my books and nobooks.
But, of course, before the war, I used to meet with some friends over lunch in some cafe or go to the cinema (I prefer to go alone anyway) or for a walk. Now? I almost always alone. A lot of people I know left Ukraine.

Question: What did you do before Feb 24, 2022 in Kyiv, and what was your story on your impressions upon living in the city, and growing up?

Me: It's a long story. I will highlight some facts. I wasn't born in Kyiv; I'm from a small town in Western Ukraine. I came to Kyiv when I was 26 (or something). Why? I always knew that I belonged to this city. I have had different jobs here, starting from working as a secretary in one of the largest consulting companies to CEO of a non-profit organization (yes, I was for a few years). My last job was as Chief Strategy Officer at an IT company.

And before we go to during the war life, I'd like to share a picture. It was Kyiv the other day. Question: I’d like to know about how you deal with these newly-awake morning moments - I remember how panicky I felt waking during the first Covid lockdown. Do you just get out of bed and get on with living rather than lying a few more minutes and panicking about the war

Me: Once, I mentioned that my mornings start with checking war news. No panic, just total acceptance of reality. When you have war and wake up alive, the right thing to do is to live as much as you can.

Question: Have you had changes to your daily life that have surprised you?

Me: Yes. I'm having warcoffee instead of coffee, air raid alerts, sirens, explosions, and shelters (I don't go there, but anyway, it's something I had not before the war)...

Question: Do you worry that you are quite exposed to the evil Russians, given they probably hate such popular Ukrainian people on Twitter?

Me: I don't worry, but sometimes it hurts. Yesterday I was attacked by bots, trolls, and maybe even people (some of them had ru flags in their bio). They won't stop me, of course.

Question: You often ask us to share pics/stories from our lives to make you feel better for a bit, but does that maybe sometimes make you feel angry/sad/jealous too? Because that could be kind of your life, if not for the orcs?

Me: Never. Being angry or jealous won't change anything. I love seeing your pictures and video. It's some rest for me. I am glad that you are safe and have a normal life. Why should I want you to live in a nightmare as I do? No way.

Question: A lot of the city looks pristine and untouched... How is it where you are?

Me: As I show in my 1minutewalks on Twitter)

Question: If you could move, would you and if so, where.

Me: I won't move anywhere. Only after our victory, I'm going to travel worldwide. But now... I have the country I love so much. I'm here and will stay here.

Next time we will talk more things about me. I got some questions from you. Ooops, no. Next time I will share with you my trip to another Ukrainian city. I hope I'll manage to go there and show you what we're fighting for. But I will, for sure, answer the questions in one of the letters.

A picture? Sharing with you one more picture of Kyiv I took. Last thing for today. I set up the possibility of buying regular warcoffee. Some kind of membership but without special perks now (later, I might figure out something for supporters and members; now, it's only some exclusive letters). But it's not obligatory. You may buy me warcoffee any time you want (or don't buy any). It's just for those who want to support me regularly but might forget about it (you have tons of your life).

Membership options are available here.

Thank you for being with me and reading my letters.

Strong Ukrainian hugs,

Yara (or Yaroslava)
