The Benefits Of Daily Sunlight

By Jo Watt

We all need our daily dose of Vitamin D and sunlight to benefit our health.

While exposing our skin to the sun’s UV rays can be harmful to our skin if we can get sunburnt, there are also its upsides that are beneficial for our wellbeing.

Exposing our self to sunlight early in the morning when the sun is least harmful releases the hormone serotonin which is associated with boosting our mood and helping us feel calm and focussed.

Ever wondered why we feel depressed during the winter months or why in some countries where there is limited sunlight many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Depressive Disorder and feel depressed when they don’t have daily exposure to sunlight?

Being exposed to sunlight helps:

- Boost our mood

- Increases focus & calm

- Helps relieve stress

- Can help prevent certain cancers

- Can help to heal some skin conditions

- May improve some auto immune conditions

- Helps build strong bones

- Makes us feel good

So when is the best time to soak up some sun-rays and enjoy the sunlight?

The best time of the day is sunrise when the sun is more gentle. Not only do you enjoy a beautiful view as the sun comes up, but you also are able to get your daily dose of Vitamin D without the sun scorching your skin. I wouldn’t advise sitting out in the sun during the hottest part of the day. Personally I've experienced sunburn endless times and it ain't fun!

Find a nice place to sit and face the sun, allowing yourself to breathe deeply, connect with your senses, and become mindful. Sit in the sun for 10-15 minutes breathing in slowly and noticing your surroundings. If you do this every day, you will start to notice a shift in your mood, outlook and have lower stress levels or you may feel more energised.

I recently discovered a quite controversial post lately with a man butthole sunning. If your game to read it, there is another idea or just to give you a giggle for the day.

Personally I love to spend some time in the sun during an early morning walk or when I'm in the garden with my animals.

What ways do you like to get some Vitamin D?
