The difference between Earthing & Grounding

By Jo Watt

Grounding has so many benefits for our health. Interestingly enough I discovered several different ways of grounding.

1. Earthing – which is known as connecting to the Earth barefoot

2. Grounding – using our senses to connect us back to the present moment

Interestingly enough, I’ve come to make sense now why grounding is so important, as it connects us back to the present moment and it anchors us to the earth.

Here’s some benefits of Earthing and walking barefoot:

  • Restores your natural walking patterns also known as our Gait and helps us strengthen certain groups of muscles in our legs.

  • Improves balance & body awareness which can help with pain relief

  • Better foot mechanics

  • Helps to maintain range of motion in your feet and ankle joints and help with strength and stability in our muscles and ligaments.

  • Relief from wrongly fitted shoes

  • Helps strengthen leg muscles & support the lower back

  • Connects you to the Earth's natural energies which has so many health benefits including it helps to reduce pain, improve sleep, reduce stress, improves your immune system and connects you more strongly back with nature.

So let's talk about ways we can ground ourselves. Grounding is a form of mindfulness that connects us into the present moment.

Here are some ways you can ground yourself into the present moment:

  • Pick up items or touch items near you. Notice the textures, sensations, weight & colours.

  • Breathe Deeply. Slowly inhale & exhale. Notice each breath and how it feels.

  • Practice mindful walking. Go for a short walk and notice your rhythm, concentrating on your steps and how it feels walking.

  • Notice the smells around you. Is there a certain fragrance you can smell? Is it a flower, a perfume, your favourite essential oil, the smell of homemade cooking. Notice the smells and its qualities whether it is citrus, sweet, spicy, sharp, floral etc

  • Move your body. Yoga or any form of exercise is great. Notice how your body feels with each movement, or how your hands or feet feel against the floor.

  • Listen to your surroundings and focus on hearing the noises around you. Do you hear traffic? Birds in the garden? Children crying or laughing? Dogs barking? People talking?

  • Feel your body. Notice where your hair touches your back, your pulse, if your body feels stiff or sore, is your stomach full or hungry etc

  • Try to 5,4,3,2,1 method where you use your senses to find things around you. Eg. List 5 things you see, 4 things you hear, 3 things you can touch/hold, 2 things you can smell & 1 thing you can taste.

  • Spend time with a pet. Notice how their fur feels, their markings and unique characteristics.

  • Listen to Music - Focus on the melody and lyrics. How does it make you feel, does it give you physical sensations or what words stand out to you the most?

There is also a great movie called “The Earthing Movie” which is a great movie to watch about the benefits of Grounding.. It’s a really cool documentary that’s worth watching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44ddtR0XDVU
