Wellness Check 10/14/2021

Oct 14, 2021

It is Thursday. Some call it Thirsty Thursday.

As such I'm going to go back to one of my original topics, one that subtly is in each of my wellness checks but is so important: staying hydrated.

We are between 45-65% water as adults depending on weight and gender. You'll start feeling thirsty at just 2-3% of your body's normal water loss. A 2% dehydration impairs performance in mental tasks and physical coordination. Many times when we have headaches it's due to dehydration which is why most headache medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen say to drink a full cup of water with them because often times the water will do just as much to help relieve the pain as the medicine. If you need the medicine you should take it but it can be worth your time to drink some water first and see if that resolves the issue.

Now you might be wondering "well if water just fixes my headaches what else does it do for you?" Glad you asked.

Water is the building block of organic cells.

  • Water is an insulator, regulating internal body temperature. This because water has a high specific tempature, plus the body uses perspiration and respiration to regulate temperature.

  • Water is needed to metabolize proteins and carbohydrates which provides your body food. Obviously it is the primary component of saliva, which is used to break down carbohydrates and helps you swallowing food, as such it's a good idea to drink some water before eating especially if your mouth feels a bit dry.

  • The compound lubricates joints.

  • Water insulates the brain, spinal cord, organs, and fetus in wombs. It also acts as a shock absorber for your body, anything from tumbles and falls to just walking around.

  • Water is used to flush waste and toxins from the body via urine, a good sign of hydration level is the color of your urine in fact.

  • Water is the principal solvent in the body. It dissolves minerals, soluble vitamins, and certain nutrients to keep your body running

  • Water carries oxygen and nutrients to your body's cells to keep you healthy.

But Wesley, I'm a writer, I sit at my computer all day and haven't seen the outside world since gym class several decades ago. Okay first off you should get outside some more, that's another topic, but second even if you stay inside your body needs to replenish water as it gets used up from just being alive. You do get about 20% of your fluids from food but that still leaves about 80% of your fluid intake from liquids.

So go on drink a cup of water right now, you'll probably feel better, and it will probably help you get back to focusing on your writing project.

Stay hydrated, keep dreaming.
