Leadership and Authenticity

Nov 12, 2023

Each Friday, I send out a newsletter to a growing community of dedicated educators. Here are 5 takeaways from this past week’s edition.

TGIF Teacher Newsletter Top 5 — Leadership and Authenticity

1. The first step in becoming better is to decide to lead in the first place. Teachers can develop their leadership in the classroom by exploring different leadership styles, such as transformational and servant leadership. By embracing these leadership styles, teachers can create a positive and empowering environment for their students to thrive.

2. Strengthen relationships and enhance classroom culture by embracing your authentic self as a teacher. Show your unique style, wear funny t-shirts, or have a class pet. Connect with students by exploring shared interests.

3. Research shows that incorporating writing activities into subjects like science, social studies, and math can greatly enhance learning across grade levels. A meta-analysis of 56 experiments found that writing about content material significantly improves learning for elementary, middle, and high school students.

4. Success is worth celebrating! As teachers, it’s crucial to pause and acknowledge our achievements, boosting confidence and fostering a positive mindset. This applies to our students too! Try starting the week by asking students to write down their successes from the previous week. Let’s build positive momentum together! One idea to try in the classroom: Create a “Success Wall” where students can post their achievements and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. It’s a great way to cultivate a supportive and encouraging classroom environment.

5. Morning meditation provides teachers with numerous benefits, including reducing anxiety and stress, improving sleep quality, and enhancing overall well-being. By dedicating just five minutes in the morning to simple breathing exercises, teachers can set a positive tone for their day. Starting the day with mindfulness allows teachers to cultivate a sense of calm and reap the rewards throughout their day.
