Nginx Proxy Host

Nginx Proxy Host

May 12, 2020

With more time at home, I've been working on misc applications, primarily Docker-based so I can run them in Unraid easily. I'd like to highlight a recent discovery that I think warrants more attention:

That would be none other than Nginx Proxy Host by @jc21. This is the kind of amazing application that I love working on. At its core, it's just an Nginx proxy server running in Docker. But what sets it apart is that it takes all the technical mumbo jumbo and breaks down the 80% use case into an elegant user interface and a clever backend to write out the proper Nginx config to make things work.

I started using personally it and quickly found that I was having to make the same customization to each of my forwarded domains to block access from anybody outside of my home network. So I submitted a pull request to add IP based access-control to the application.

It seemed to be a big success and working in an unfamiliar framework/language has been challenging and rewarding. I also look forward to spotlighting similar that deserve attention.

I would encourage anybody who finds Nginx Proxy Manager useful to go buy jc21 a coffee.
