Gotham Knights Dev Revises Batgirl Backstory to Address Harmful Disability Tropes
comicbook.com
The developer of Gotham Knights has revised the backstory for Batgirl after fans criticized the game for using harmful disability tropes. In the comics, Batgirl is shot in the spine by Joker and is then largely seen in a wheelchair. Depending on the version of the character, she becomes Oracle, Batman's eyes and ears while he's in the field. She is able to use her technical wiz to be a major asset to Batman without getting into combat. Batgirl's biography in Gotham Knights indicates she was critically injured in some sort of fight, though it's unclear with who. The biography noted she was able to return to active duty as Batgirl after training, something some fans took issue with as it's not as easy as doing some training to recover from a critical injury that places someone into a wheelchair. This has been seen as a harmful trope throughout media and it seems Warner Bros. is aware of this.

Marginalized people are not your subject to write about, but your peers to engage with
biopoliticalphilosophy.com
A couple of weeks ago I attended a new book fair at my neighborhood and, unbeknownst to me, my colleague and friend Siobhan Guerrero-MacManus was scheduled to talk on a roundtable by people from the sexual-generic diversity. She was giving a very short time to talk, so she had to cover a lot of ground and make a lot of points very quickly. One of them stuck out to me specially. She stressed the importance of institutions like academia to attend to diversity, but not merely as subjects of study. She did not say as what instead, but it is not hard to see what she meant. Consider disability. Attending to disability not merely as subject of study requires, not organizing conferences and seminars on the ontology and epistemology of disability, but proper action to improve accessibility right now and a commitment to continue until it becomes effectively universal. Ramps, cushioned seats and doors with larger grips show more genuine commitment to diversity than another paper, book or Op Ed. Similar considerations apply to other marginalized groups.
Writing Disability and Chronic Illness – a 6 wk workshop w/ Ashna Ali
theoperatingsystem.org
The Crip Lit for Spoonies workshop series is a series of reading group-style writing workshops called “CripLit4Spoonies” that centers literatures of chronic illness and disability. The first CripLit looked at the relationship between trauma and disability. CripLit4Spoonies II focuses on the genre and poetics of writing about one’s own experience of illness and disability as a way of healing and asserting the truth of one’s own experience in the face of isolation, silencing, pathologization, and gas-lighting. Over the course of six weeks, we will read excerpts from works on cancer, chronic pain, gynecological disorders, nervous system disorders, and mental illness. Each week, we will share body scans, no less than 30 minutes of collaborative writing in response to prompts generated by the readings, and our responses and impressions of the readings. The workshop envisions itself as a space to share vulnerability, resources, and care through the shared experience of living as a “spoonie,” or a chronically ill individual.
