I never even noticed this plaque on the sea front - Scott from Mapes cleaned it up and posted on facebook about it!
So here it is - "bench" #350, celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, 125 years to the day!
A little digging on the internet found a scan of the West Coast Directory from 1883/4, on the National Library of Scotland website

It appears that Mr Tyre lived in 2 Crawford Street, and was President of the Cumbrae Bowling Club.
