The latest PineDio LoRa Mesh Gateway image was made 01.16.2022, and happy to share latest in this post.

Based on Armbian, a true Debian setup, currently it contains the option to switch back and forth between TTN (TheThingsNetwork), and your own private Chirpstack LoRaWAN network.

From here, what you do with the PineDio Gateway is up to you, and currently plan to upload an updated image regularly.

I have chirpstack added into the apt updates. Anyone who has an image from before New Years may notice the Chirpstack keys for apt expired in January. This is fixed in the new 01.16.2022 image.

If you have a nice setup going and don't want to use the newer image, run the following (in one line) to fix the GPG key situation:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 1CE2AFD36DBCCA00

Then:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

It's already done for you on the 01.16.2022 image (and newer).

📡 🔐 🧅chirpstack-onion

In this latest image I created an optional command to automate converting Chirpstack web management over to a Tor hidden service onion.

This adds encryption (end-to-end between each Tor client), protecting data and credentials from being sniffed over the LAN/network, and allows for easy management worldwide, without need to open firewall/port forwarding (as Tor connects out for this).

(as well as protects the client ip address from the server, and server ip address from the clients)

Alternatively, if Tor Hidden Services aren't for you, and you still would like to add encryption, you can follow the more lengthy configuration here: https://www.chirpstack.io/application-server/install/config/

My goal with chirpstack-onion command was to automate something to make encryption more within reach.

Both will work.

📡 🔐 🧅 chirpstack-onion command in action:

In the screenshot below, we see the simplicity of the chirpstack-onion command. Simply make sure chirpstack channel is enabled in the gateway-config command, and then issue:

sudo chirpstack-onion

Below is a screenshot of this command being run. It automatically downloads and sets up tor for you, creating a hidden service in the configuration for Chirpstack server.

The .onion address in our screenshot is hidden under the "Onion Address Redacted Here" location (to prevent attackers from viewing my Chirpstack onion server).

As it says, run the command, and then point your browser to the onion address and you are ready to use Chirpstack using MITM resistant .onion encryption.
