Applications "Calling Home" (Pinephone Opensnitch) + Faraday Bag

Jan 22, 2022

Outside the previously described malware detection and blocking using built in "point and click" managed firewall, we can additionally use the "Events" window in opensnitch to discover which applications (and operating systems) are programmed to "call home". Covering deeper tricks on this in future.

We also take a look at a faraday bag I recently acquired. I cover the importance of this down below: and it might be more than you think (hint: it's not just bluetooth/wifi)

(more detail topics mentioned in this video below)

What Is App "Calling Home" And Why Should I Care? When an application makes previously unknown connections to a server outside its described functionality.

This can become a low-key method of tracking and reporting on program user IP addresses, even sending activity logs from that user's computer.

Many applications "call home" (unknowing to the user), and opensnitch allows you to watch the event window in real-time.

More on this in future coverage and tricks for using this information.

Taking advantage of the topic to show it running on my Pinephone in my newly bought Keyboard case. Fun Linux toy (and phone). Important to mention: I'm not telling everyone to get a Pinephone - Linux phones aren't for everyone -- yet.

FARADAY CAGE

The Faraday Cage provides a method of electromagnetic "shielding". Containing electromagnetic fields inside a controlled space (introduced by Michael Faraday.

This type of "shielding" is most commonly implemented to (many times to protect sensitive devices) avoid electromagnetic interference: wherein multiple electronic devices and/or radio receivers/transmitters can cause electromagnetic energy to come into conflict with functionality
(for example: in close proximity to other devices).

EXAMPLE: Consider a radio. Imagine You are listening to your favorite station. Suddenly you hear strong static noises overtaking the sound of your favorite song. This is one example of electromagnetic emissions causing interference with your receiver.

I do suggest above video (if you haven't seen it yet).

The Backstory:

In the above video, I'm using a Software Defined Radio (SDR) on my Pinetab. Just by chance, I discovered my (remote) computer's speakers/amp (both devices 15 feet away from one another) was remotely transmitting all sound in the room (speaker becoming a remotely transmitting microphone) on a specific set of frequencies.

In fact at this moment I was scanning frequencies looking for voice... I found it... but as I cleaned it up, I realized that voice was a SLIGHT delay of the very video I was watching at that moment, on an entirely different machine! I tested this with a dipole antenna 15 feet away from the computer.

I was also able to pick up my own voice speaking.

Imagine what more powerful equipment might be cable of!

Above video only works with recording the actual signals themselves - no actual microphone involved here. Recorded directly from SDR device on GQRX.

At the end of the video, I clean up the audio to demonstrate how you can remove 'noise'.

YOUR PHONE PRIVACY (RADIO TRACKING: WiFI/BLE/CELL)

SOLUTION: WiPri (-w) flag Turns Off WiFi Min After You Leave Your Network Area. Various Other Flags Provide Disinfo Spoofing Options (signal, hostname, mac address).

Tracking phones is commonly done using the transmissions from a phone's built in radio transceivers (send/receive). Two very common examples of this radio tracking are Bluetooth (BLE), and WiFi. To a lesser extent, cellular modems (IMEI, IMSI Catchers). Each phone's bluetooth/WiFi card transmits (over the open air for anyone listening) unique identifiers such as a MAC Address. Learn more on MAC Addresses and tracking from the introduction to software/script solutions:

WiFi Tracking Display:
(EX: Did you know even dept stores are tracking your device by WiFi/BLE to determine what isles you spend most of your time shopping -and in turn communicate with apps to deliver catered ads based on this shopping "time count"?)

THE FARADAY BAG

A Faraday Cage, in "bag" form (see mine in video below) lined with a highly conductive material, such as copper. This helps to "shield" electromagnetic from escaping from a phone keep in the bag.

Did you know? Not only do your bluetooth/wifi cards give off MAC addresses, and other unique identifiers...

Electronic devices give off their own very unique signature. That's right. Your phone can be fingerprinted by the read from its electromagnetic emission fingerprint:

That's it for now.

We will cover more on application "calling home" in future videos/writing.

As well as look more closely at Faraday bags.

I don't want to spoil anything. πŸ˜‰
