I rarely share petitions in their own post.
If we as a collective interest do not set the narrative, others will do so for us.
Some may say to themselves: "wait, this only affects Europe".
Not true.
If this passes, long-term precedent / outlook affects virtually everyone. Other countries will follow.
Many western countries are unveiling equally dangerous propositions:
UK ("Online Safety Bill"), USA ("Earn It Act": sneak attack on encryption)
Covered various stories regarding efforts by special interests / government attempts to "backdoor" encryption. Couple examples below.
EXAMPLE #1: weakening the random number generation depended upon by a given encryption algorithm. An example of this: story.
EXAMPLE #2: local content scanning / sharing / reporting device users: exactly what this petition fights against.
Last year Apple presented plans for iPhone local content scanning, under pretense of "protecting kids". The stated goal: a noble cause (we all want to protect kids), but more likely than not: complete failure in results (iPhone content scanning story).
While Apple may have walked back those plans publicly, European law being put forth would likely morph its AI media scanning neural hash into a privacy invasion monster.
β οΈ European Union is attempting to mandate 24 / 7 100% content scanning of all user devices. This may require platforms to change the way they securely (or not) operate.
π‘ By signing today's petition, you make your voice heard: against the big lie that breaking encryption (through content scanning or otherwise) somehow protects children. π
β οΈ SIMPLE: this claim is 100% FALSE (intentional, or not).
If silent, we frogs may come to a rolling boil. πΈ π«π₯ π
π REAL SOLUTIONS
The best way to protect children remains in old fashioned police work: sting operations. While technology may advance, the human condition is best exploited (for justice) through authentic human interaction / relationships.
There is no virtue in forcing technology (totalitarian by definition) upon all (that undoubtedly restricts all human autonomy: even the creative process so many economies depend on: see below).
Old fashioned human on human investigative work remains the most proficient avenue for bringing serial offenders to justice (all without harming human rights).
What you believe is secure, no longer π secure.
β οΈ Every single text, image, Signal / WhatsApp message, attorney - client privileged / journalism contact, whistleblower and Human Rights defender would be monitored on all devices: a complete erasure of personal / private spaces on our devices.
Each revelation of Journalism under pretense of exposing the whistleblower.
Silencing stories before they even begin.
Is this by design? π€
Destroying our last notions of "freedom". Nearly every other part of life: already under monitor.
Have you considered how this 24 / 7 watchful, self-reporting eye may affect human autonomy? Our most basic ability to make our own decisions?
How a system such as this would expand in scope (as has happened in virtually every other case of surveillance)?
π‘ When you compromise privacy, you strip potential from creative thinking. For the mind to truly embrace creative process, some level of "open", private thought is desired.
Placing all thought into a very limited box ("virtual walls"), where the creative is forced to work within confines of said box: knowing every single thought / note is logged / watched / reported: This places limits on the aware individual. Halting true free expression.
Stifling Creativity.
βοΈ Virtual shackles on the π§ mind.
After all, mass surveillance imprisons thought process from its natural, autonomous flow.
Some might even consider it: "enslavement of the human soul".
If one had a goal for complete takeover (any format) using AI: from governance, to infiltrating authentic activism / human rights movements, it would start with imprisoning the human mind through mass surveillance / AI reporting / scoring.
For creative thought is our greatest (human) advantage: one AI cannot yet master.
On the other hand, AI integration places hard limits on what we are able to do on a given system.
In the long-term view, limitations fundamentally change thinking.
From fully independent, to restricted adaptation.
β οΈ Consider AI Based Filtering / Content Moderation: now relate this to human thought.
This is not to say "all AI is bad." All depends on motive behind creation / investment.
Odds are, if a given system has allowance for abuse, it will occur (eventually).
Artificial Intelligence can undoubtedly be used for good.
π‘ EXAMPLE: medical diagnosis, predict heart attacks / strokes
But... and there is a major "but" to that:
β οΈ We should never allow systems capable of population / behavior control.
CONSIDER: AI "PREDICTIVE POLICING" MADE EVEN EU OFFICIALS SUSPECTS
Our "rights", so cherished, now compromised.
π ATTACKS ON ENCRYPTION ARE NOT NEW
We've seen previous attempts: "Clipper Chip", "the crypto wars".
War against our most basic Human Rights waged for decades now.

π‘ We have to take action. For if we remain silent we allow others to set the narrative for us.
π‘ ONE THING IS FOR CERTAIN
"The Good Guys" are most certainly not among those attacking strong encryption (in turn, human autonomy / freedom).
There are no positive trade-offs here. Corruption, power seeking, result from lack of proper oversight.
Abuse occurs in virtually every technology sector.
Do not be fooled by the sales pitch of miraculous error-free AI development.
I believe the real "Good Guys" are those willing to put their necks out to stand up for real privacy / selective anonymity (revealing ourselves as we choose), human autonomy / rights, and freedom.

Everything action we take matters. All actions create reaction.
